The Natural Progression of the Publishing Industry Blog Post

With holidays in season this time of year, I got to sit back and reflect on many things. With Thanksgiving in the United States, and the Christmas season approaching us in just a few weeks, I realized how much change is actually happening around us at a rapid pace. Each day, change brings us something new. It could be the release of a software update on your iOS device, a movie, a new record or even a new point of view on an issue or hot topic. Whatever the change might be, I feel that majority of people don’t actually sit down and realize what is changing in their lives on a daily basis. As a company, PixelMags recently has gone through many changes. With the introduction of Apple Newsstand in October 2011, we have gone from 2 million readers to over 23 million readers, pushing us to literally tear down walls and hire new employees, doubling our U.S. office. The quote by the great President Abraham Lincoln of the United States comes to mind. “The best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time.” Mobile tablets and smart phones are changing the face of the publishing industry. Making reference to a previous blog post, even Barnes and Noble is advertising and selling digital reading tablet devices at all their stores, acknowledging the future of reading literature. Is Barnes and Noble predicting the end of print? Absolutely not. They are just giving the readers and buyers what they want Is PixelMags saying the future of reading is on digital tablets and mobile devices? In a way we are, but we are also doing what Barnes and Noble is doing…which is giving the readers what they want and providing the publishers a way to reach those readers and their demand. So now we come to the topic of Apple Newsstand and digital newsstands as a whole. Should publishers be grateful for Apple Newsstand?   Should Apple be grateful for publishers?  Should Publishers and Apple be grateful for distributors like PixelMags? Should readers be grateful for all the above? THE ANSWER TO ALL OF THESE… Yes. Here is why. In this industry, everything works full circle. Much like the circle of life from the Lion King. Watch this clip if you don’t understand my reference. (Skip to 0:41 if you want to get right to the circle of life lesson.) [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=bW7PlT...] Anyways, without Apple there wouldn’t be a PixelMags. Without Publishers, there wouldn’t be an Apple Newsstand. Without readers, there wouldn’t be any of us. I am just scratching the surface of a mile deep relationship here folks. The point of all of this, the point of this blog post, is to get people to sit and think of where this industry is headed. How the circle of life in this industry works. How each player in this game should realize the role everyone plays. No one is purposely changing the face of the industry, but the world is naturally progressing and along with progression comes change. The question we all have to ask ourselves is do we go along with the change and embrace it? Or do we runaway from it and hide?
